My kid is in this school. Was excited however now is disappointed. While they put lots of pressure on learning, their teachers are LOUSY. A letter of recommendation takes 2 weeks +, every time. Student EC is a mess too. As a result the student are NOT competitive despite of handwork. Student have hard time to get into RICE which is in walking distance. What’s the point if kids can’t getting a good school? Remember the school already gave up sports totally.

First let me say that Debakey is a top notch school. I love the location, the nice/new/clean feel of the school and how the PTO and administration keep parents informed of new and important information.

What I dislike, and takes away from the above, is the insurmountable workload. It is insanely ridiculous. My daughter had 3 projects in the first week of school & a quiz. HOW??? Projects have a 1 week or less turnaround time to complete.

My daughter spends at least 4 hours EVERY DAY completing homework. How is a child supposed to have time to study when they’re being drained completing piles of homework?

The school prides itself on rigor, and I appreciate rigor. I don’t appreciate unnecessary stress that leads to my child crying and shutting down over having so much to do. Some students have complained that they go to sleep at 1:00am on a “good day”. How is that ok? A heavy Workload, rigor, and upholding a prestigious expectation is not a priority over wellness, sleep, mindset.

The staff have given motivational talks about “you’re gonna fail, and it’s ok”, and “a lot of students go to their homeschool in their first semester “. How is that encouraging and motivating? I understand that you have to live up to the challenge, but make the challenge sustainable, achievable.

These kids deserve to have a sense of normalcy. I don’t work this hard in my paid career.

Graduated here from 2010. The only good thing that came out of this school was the math department but then again every school’s strongest department is math. They hire people not based on teaching performance but degrees. Teachers don’t even bother asking their students how they care. Definitely not sending my kids here.

It’s a very good school for students who are used to PreAP and AP standards. For students, like me, who aren’t used to those standards go through a hard time in the Freshman year but thankfully most of the teachers are very helpful. Students are very competitive and friendly here and are, for the most part, helpful. The only problem I have is that we are pushed a little too far from my comfort and students don’t have that much free time when they get home. Most time is spent doing homework, studying, and getting what sleep we can. It’s a difficult school but if you believe in yourself, that you can make it, then it’s possible to make it through all 4 years. There are just some sacrifices that will have to be made.

It was meh the teachers can be pretty dismissive for a relatively small school not to mention there are no sports there and the teachers constantly brag about “debakey standards” if you can’t get in to somewhere like bellaire or carnegey then I guess this would be an okay option maybe.

I made a lot of friends and had a generally pleasant experience. Not all the teachers are good, but many are exceptional. Being self motivated and organized is especially important here just due to the sheer size of the student population. Sure there are fights and drugs and scary kids, but none of which will effect your experience unless you seek them out. All and all a pretty good, if imperfect place to begin your adult life.

I went to this school for about 9 weeks and i am never going to step another foot on this campus again. The students here dont do their work at all (unless you’re in a IB class), and just so that the school can look good they pass everyone with a 70 so the school can have a high passing rate. The school does not care at all for real teaching values. I had half of my teachers cuss at me and it was for no reason at all. I am a person that cares what is being taught to me, but the teachers and faculty at lamar do not care at all. Do not send your kid to this school, please take it from someone that actually went there.

In the school’s current state of disarray due to the simultaneous process of the destruction of two of its aged buildings and the construction of a modern building this is putting students and faculty at a large disadvantage. However, it is not changing the confusing nature of the IB program which is so forcibly thrust upon its candidates that most students have little to no idea of what is to be expected of them. Teachers are no help as the famed HUB has taken away all expectations of actual teaching in the class room. While there are some fabulous teaches that I have been delighted to be taught from, especially in the math department, most could be outdone by anyone picked off the street with the basic free knowledge that Wikipedia provides. The decrepit buildings, majority of the staff, and obnoxious students that have little to no punishments for most of their offenses have overall depressed my view of how anything in the real world will be run in the public sector. Nonetheless, the only upside to this establishment is the apparent lack of competition for class rank and the social scene. I walk through the hallways and often students I have never seen before; you could go through the school and talk to ten different people everyday and not get to everyone by the end of the semester. This vast pool of students gives each individual a greater chance to find a group that they are compatible with. In my opinion most of the students are mind-numbingly rambunctious, however there are some very intelligent and fun groups of kids that make this school better. I hope that this new building and system that HISD plans to implement for Lamar will exceed my expectations. That will probably happen though since they are so low currently. I know I will never attend the new school and only be affected by the gradual progress of the government employees that are paid by the hour and not by the work done. As I sit in portable buildings for the rest of the duration of my junior and soon to be senior year I will look to the future, which is the new grades that will come into Lamar year after year. I hope they aren’t as discouraged as I’ve become and find motivation in the small, outstanding things in the vast debris of mediocrity.

Let’s get real here. I am from Europe and I’ve only been in this school for 6 months and Im leaving in 3. My goal here was never to learn. It was to score the higher grades possible. At Lamar you do NOT learn. The teachers give you an assignment and some notes and you just do it. They do NOT teach you anything. In the first semester I had straight A’s and I am no genius. If you are failing classes here is simply because 1. you dont care or 2 you are really dumb.

If you want your child to learn do not send them here. The teachers dont care about teaching and they dont care about you either.

I dont feel safe in this school. Anyone can come in and out because there are no gates whatsoever. There is one officer inside campus but he just seats his fat ass in the golf car and does nothing. Any person can come in with a gun anf shoot us all. And dont get me started on drugs…… there is a lot of weed and pills in this school.

The american kids there are the worst. Most of them are xenophobic and very very VERY ignorant (for example a girl there thought France was in the US).

Overall this school was OK TO ME because I only need them grades 🙂 because Im coming back to Portugal and the educational system tehre is much better. But if you really expect your kids to learn please DONT SEND THEM THERE. I have some good teachers but most of them just dont do anything all class long. Again, with all the shootings America has I dont fell safe in that school. Anyone can come in and out and students leave school all the time and no one cares.

I found this experience here in the states very interesting but Im looking forward to go back to Portugal. You have no idea… the kids in this school are so so so so so so ignorant. I feel so bad for them.

AGAIN, IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO LEARN AND HAVE A GOOD TIME DO NOT SEND THEM TO LAMAR. I hope this helped.

This school is disorganize , have rats in it , AP teachers are not good and IB either. Do not send your kid here. Private school please. My kid have a lot of videos that I should put in the internet, from student dancing on top of their table while in class and also kids selling drugs , using drugs and offering drugs all around the school. Also , kids stealing each other laptops chargers etc. I do not know what is going on , but the kids has outnumber the staff. It is a pity they are having this problems. Do not send your kid to this school! Teachers teaching math with no math degree ..unbelievable 🙁

I think this is the worst decision I could have made..This is only my opinion….and based on what I am going through with the teachers and other staff.I noticed just a few weeks ago that some of the staff is just there not to help the kids…And Mrs. Kaur is not my favorite she look down upon many…I noticed that within 10 minutes of a meeting. The principal..Mr. Crook he will listen but at the same time it’s not much concern because he is for his staff, not really interested in the other side.I was excited about the school at first but now it’s not something I am looking into next year. Maybe it’s great for some…awesome for others but for me it’s not what I expected…..

I do not recommend this school!!!!
I strongly believe that having a trustworthy and honest principal is important.
I was asked to assist with an event. I made it happened and spent LOTS of my personal time and money.
I was told that I would be reimbursed and to date more than a year later the principal has made excuses and promises he cannot keep.
Didn’t even get a Thank you!!!
Most importantly, I do not even have a son or relative that attends this school and I helped because I wanted to but not expecting to get ripped off.
I am all for helping but it’s frustrating when you get ripped off unrespecting.

Our daughter absolutely loves her new school!!! She is in the 6th grade so she’s new to Middle School; we couldn’t have picked a better school for her transition. She is excited everyday to tell us about her day and all the activities she gets to participate in and experiences. They have so many things planned for the children such as the trip to China coming up this summer. Our daughter absolutely adores all of her new friends and learning of a new culture and the language of Chinese. We absolutely love how the teachers do so much for the children and how they communicate with us parents through Living Tree. They are greatly appreciated! We were so grateful to get our daughter in at the very last minute because MIMS is a great school, one of the best public schools out there! Hopefully, they will add 8th grade so that my daughter can spend all of her middle school years here.

Worst school ever! My daughter went to this school her 7th grade year, she is now a senior, and I never thought bullying would be an issue although I knew the majority of the school was Hispanic kids. That honestly never crossed my mind because most of my closest friends are Hispanic. Boy was I wrong. Yes, we are African American, and yes I knew the school was 98% Hispanic, and that was not an issue until the kids at school would pick on her because she was black. They would sing the la cocaracha(however you spell the roach song in Spanish) to her all the time. Try to fight her and called her out of her name consistently! I too complained to the principal and nothing was done about it. My daughter’s best friend and her little brother mom took them out of the school mid semester because of the same thing! I was so happy Harmony accepted my daughter when 8th grade came, and she no longer had to endure the racism at this school. They need to make this school way more diverse than what it is, and they need to do a better job, along with these kids parents, at teaching their children not to pick on others because they are of a different culture. They should instead embrace the diversity. This is what I love so much about Harmony Schools. They are so diverse. Houston Gateway can learn a few things from them. I wish someone would of given me a warning before I sent my daughter to this school her 7th grade year. Do your research parents!

What kind of teacher leaves a kid without a sweater & turns up the ac to freezing to the point where to kid goes home with boogers & a cough ? Then switch the kid to a different class & he feels EXTREMELY unwelcome by the teacher & didn’t let him have dinner (since they get out at 5pm) poor kid went to his parents & broke down because he was so embarrassed & felt humiliated . Do better Houston

I’m currently a vocalist here at HSPVA, and although keeping up with everything is challenging, I believe this school is worth it. I’ve never encountered an environment quite like the one that is present at PVA. Every single teacher I’ve had a class with does everything they can to make the students understand, learn, and grow, all while maintaining a fun environment. The stress is undeniable- if you go here, you will be stressed. But everyone here at this school is willing and able to help you work past the stress. HSPVA creates amazing art and amazing people.

I love going to HSPVA. As a freshman at HSPVA, I have a lot to say. I will try to refrain from typing a whole entire essay, but the new HSPVA google page has only two reviews, so maybe this one might help. This review will describe all of the art areas, so if you are having a child try out, maybe this can help you. Overall, the school itself has a top academics program as well as the other art programs. Every single day at school is almost a new experience. It is like no other school, since you hear vocal music rushing through the hallways during classes. This school is the right place if you know that there is a future for you in any type of art, vocal, dancing, visual, etc. HSPVA provides many opportunities in these types of careers. However, this doesn’t mean that it is an easy school to be in. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to keep good grades, so it is quite important to have a good work ethic. Specifically being in the art department takes a lot of dedication. The work load is a lot, but it made my artwork improve at a rapid rate, and I can only assume it would do the same for the other departments. Every day you spend at least 2 and a half hours in your art area, and there are specific classes in those areas. Theater has a wide range of classes from dance to workshopping (which is learning how to build sets and includes hands on wood work). Some of the consultants are HSPVA alumni, and have attended top art colleges (some of my art teachers are able to advise me on major art schools I want to go to, since they went there). To conclude, this is a great school to go to if you have a true passion for the arts.

I will start to attend this coming fall 2016. Just from the current student body that welcomed me during audition, I can say that i know I will love HSPVA. The coordinators and judges have already made me feel welcomed and a part of the school even though i will start this August 2016. I think that HSPVA staff and students really made me feel like a part of their HSPVA family from the beginning.I had other great school choices but; HSPVA made that difference .Thank You HSPVA !!!

I went to this school years back for visual art. I didn’t like how they thought “counciling” was putting students in a closet room with other students and pass out “are you depressed” work sheets. Anime wasn’t “art” yet they allowed juniors and seniors to draw it- from what I rememberd, they would fail me automatically for it. Also, why should they grade you on how you’re using your schedule journal? Its a good school, but they seem to be letting a few things be overlooked.

My son went to this school 6th to 8th grade. I think it’s an awesome school. We only had one issue with one teacher Mrs. Moore who needs to be removed from working with children. Other than that no issues and/or complaints.

This is one of the best schools in all of HISD, Texas and the Nation. The students and faculty are fantastic. The PSAT scores of the 8th and 9th grade students are excellent. The AP Course offerings and the success of the students is exceptional. The culture of the school is loving and nurturing. The students are collectively working to build a better life for themselves and their families.

From an outside point of view, my experience with this school has been unfortunately unsatisfactory. The new magnet program does not warrant the manner in which this school is operating.

The administrative staff have been consistently rude, with the exception of the prinicpal and one other staff member. In general, the atmosphere felt oppressive and even agressive. The staff gave the impression of being ignorant or just too busy to be concerned. Obviously in an effort to compensate, several office personel demonstrated rude and arrogant behaviour as it seemed to be the accepted attitude to have amongst these ladies.

It should be noted there was one employee who was pleasant and genuinely kind toward students and parents working in the office. She seemed to be over worked and as she was organizing handouts, the other 5 or 6 office employees stood around watching her with little concern. She seemed out of place in this environment and unappreciated. The nurse was very helpful and informative as well.

The manner in which the phone is answered should be monitered and recorded for quality assurance. There should be some proper training as to how phone calls are handled appropriately which should include stating a name during the initial greeting. It makes callers uncomfortable to have to ask whom are they speaking to for assistance. The woman who most often answers phone calls is very unprofessional and even juvenile toward callers, I would go so far to say that her demeanor is that of a student attending her freshman year at SIS, which gives her too much credit. Every single phone call to this school has been handled without courtesy and consistently lacking in respect.

Overall, the atmosphere is un-friendly and sterile. There is no warmth, no character, no engaging or inviting elements within the energy of the staff, with the principal as the exception (as well as the one lady and nurse).

This school is going through a transistion phase, from a very neglected and ill equipped facility to reaching a solid education standard academically, the improvements are absolutely necessary and long overdue. However, in the best interests of the students, the staff of administrative personel and teachers would do well to incorporate and instill human values such as compassion and kindness into the manner in which they work and the examples they provide. To generate a nuturing spirit toward our curious and immature children, the environment they are influenced by, and the adults operating within it, should have the common goal of being helpful and as thoughtful as posible toward the students. The students are still children, after all, not adults and not robots.

As of right now, 2018, Sharpstown International is consistently gaining in legitmacy and every day is beginning to compete with more and more schools. The growth in the past two years of our Model UN program (#1 in the district) is insane! There are tons of AP opportunities that are definiely open to students. Keep in mind that we are often confused with Sharpstown Highschool, a school with a really bad rap. As is the focus of our school, I have learned a ridiculous amount of things about the world. I have taken every opportunity that this school has given me in all aspects. I heavily
particpate in Model UN, in our tier 2 Best Buddies Chapter, Our CIEE study abroad partnership. Students from SIS have gone to China, to South America, to Europe, Australia all thanks to our international program. Our curriculum in and of itself consists not only of the basic subjects, but applications of those subjects on international topics. The community is small but amazingly nice and supportive! I’m glad fate brought me here.

So glad the school opened. Congrats to all the Buffalos ( past and future). School looks great and so do the wonderful kids. However!!!Traffic…tooo tooo much…I expected traffic, but OMG..I do not blame the kids, cause I’ve looked at traffic lights, and they really have no chance to cross! Parents should not drop off kids on street, but also don’t blame them cause there is no space at front to drop them off anyways. So, what can we do? Suggestions: Get one of the cops/securities at gate to conduct traffic. There are usually three/four standing at entrance inside the gate, and no one is looking to see if anyone is safe.

Please take the time to come. I’m a 25 year old man saved and with the grace & mercy of our Lord I am still here today. A beautiful church with a growing community. I live my retreat back in 2013, and this is truly a great place to have a spiritual home. Father Mike and Father Dan and Ricky are truly incredible. The leadership and service mindset here is second to none. Love you guys. Thank God for a St Jerome!

Fabulous School!! The teachers, staff, and parents are some of the most caring people I have ever met. We have been nothing but thrilled since we started here and will continue my son’s education here until he reaches 8th grade. The principal has implemented a fun, creative learning environment while children complete courses that prepare them for the future. The kids actually love going to school and learn things so quickly!! There is a no bullying policy and they keep a safe environment for those suffering food allergies.
